In the centre of Calle Ramón y Cajal, formerly Calle Mula, we find one of the most popular places in Alcantarilla, as the traditional Wednesday weekly market has been held there and in the surrounding area since ancient times.

In 1963, the Town Hall paid tribute to the poet Jara Carrillo with a bronze bust on a pedestal surrounded by plants, located in this square due to its proximity to his birthplace, which is still preserved in the old Calle Alta, now Calle Jara Carrillo. Years later, when the square was remodelled, the bust was moved a few metres from its original location.

Pedro Jara Carrillo, born in Alcantarilla in 1876, was a renowned poet, novelist, playwright and journalist of the time and also a councillor of the City Council of Murcia, with whose society he became involved with philanthropic aid and cultural initiatives. Thanks to his intervention, the foundation of the Conservatory of Music and the creation of the University of Murcia in 1915 were successfully achieved. The poet is the author of the lyrics of the Hymn to Murcia and the Hymn for the Coronation of the Virgen de la Fuensanta.
